Dear Fellow Sailing Members,

Another Sailing Season beckons with this year’s races and cruises only just around the corner.

I attach for your consideration the Sailing Season and once again strongly urge you to print a copy to stick on your fridge as a source of sailing inspiration as the Season progresses (they also have the tide times for most weekends and are a useful source of reference!).

We are lucky to welcome several new members and boats to the sailing fleet this year and hope to build on that as the summer progresses with additional membership applications already in progress.

The Early Bird Shake Down Race is scheduled for the 15th of May and it is looking likely there will be a number of keen competitors launched ready to kick off the Sailing season as we mean to go on.

This inaugural race should get us off to a good start and provide a good chance to test the new yachts and crews starting this season.

A mini chart of the standard race courses is attached. The Sailing committee are also looking to arrange an informal pre season briefing one Friday at the club regarding the forthcoming races and cruises.

We also have the usual crop of individual, series and offshore races this year, more than sufficient to satisfy the hardy and fair weather sailors of the BSC racing fleet.

Running across the whole season will be the Sailing League in its 7th glorious year (allowing for two years Covid enforced suspension). The League rewards tenacity, commitment and participation (as well as race results!) with Sailing League points leading to the possibility of overall victory and consequent temporary ownership of the largest trophy available.

The National Handicap for Cruisers (“NHC”) continues to operate and I attach the current handicaps. The initial base figures are imposed by the RYA and are updated as a rolling handicap based on race results under a strict non discretionary formula. In our experience so far there do not appear to have been any significant injustices that could not otherwise be explained by sailing prowess or weather!

If anyone notices a missing handicap please let me know and Austin will kindly crunch the numbers to rectify the situation.

We also have the usual cruises scheduled including to the IOM, Conwy and Hilbre. Full details will follow in advance as well as the Albert dock cruise and lock in kindly organised by Alan Roe.

The sailing season and individual race instructions, results, news and updates will be displayed on the notice board and website and sent out via the Whatsapp Group.

.

If you wish to be added please email your details to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or text me. Races on occasion can be altered and/ or rescheduled so whatsapp is the most effective way of being kept appraised.

The “willing crew” and “willing skippers” principle/ ethos continues as always where we can help develop club membership by co-ordinating those skippers who are willing to offer the occasional space aboard with new members/ house members in conversion/ prospective members them the chance to get some sailing experience and find out more about the club.

If you are able to offer crew opportunities and/ or know of anyone wanting to get involved in crewing please let me know.

I attach our new members sailing advert please feel free to distribute and display wherever you find the opportunity. The Sailing committee double as a new members welcoming team and are ready and willing to field and support new member enquiries.

Finally take the time to review and enjoy the club website at http://blundellsandssailingclub.co.uk/

Carl continues to develop the web site and we have additional ideas and content being added shortly (to the already very useful links and pages available). If you have any suggestions to the website please forward them on to me.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in the near future tensely clustered around the start line counting down to zero

I hope to update you on any further sailing happenings as the season progresses.

Best regards

Rohan – Vice Commodore

The BSC Sailing League will continue on the 15th of May 2022 and will run to the end of the season on the 11th of September being the last scheduled reserve race date.

The concept is simple; a league points based system will be run across all club races throughout the entire season with points available for participation regardless of ultimate race position to encourage participation and to maintain a sporting edge to the Club racing season.

The league will universally apply to all boats.

The points system is intended to be simple, consistent in effect and weight across all races and reward participation as its primary objective.

Accordingly for every race conducted the following points will be awarded to participants. The OD will also receive points for their participation to avoid penalisation as a result of their assistance to the club in facilitating races.

1st Place – 4 Points

2nd Place – 3 Points

3rd Place – 2 Points

4th and every subsequent place – 1 Point (i.e. fifteenth place would still obtain one point).

OD participant – 1 Point

There are no deductions for non participation. However a decent lead could be quickly eroded by non participation and a result of the more tenacious racers conducting a war of race participation attrition.

In order to maintain as many races as possible races will be conducted so long as a minimum of two boats are able to start, including the OD if necessary under the new OD buoy starting procedure.

Whilst a minimum of two boats must start for the race to go ahead the course need only be completed by one boat to pick up the full points e.g. two boats start allowing the race to proceed if one of the boats abandons the race the remaining boat may still complete the course to claim 1st place and the resultant league points.

If the race has to be abandoned once started or the race is cancelled by the OD at the yard/club then all attending participants will receive one point.

A league results/ positions board will be maintained at the club/ website/whatapp and newsletters and at the conclusion of the sailing season the Sailing Season Trophy will awarded to the member with the most points with runners up prizes for second and third positions.

Any issues arising from the interpretation of the league rules to be determined by the Sailing Committee.

Good luck!

Rohan – Vice Commodore
